Updating COP 15

Today,December 17, an unprecedented number of world leaders are gathering here in Copenhagen.Common action is necessary and everybody must be ready to overcome procedural obstacles, many leaders said in interviews.
125 heads of state and government must focus now a collective determination to tackle climate change. It is a real test of our collective credibility to find global solutions at the highest level, they declared. Our hope is that the leaders can seal the deal on Friday.
But for the last 2 Conference days still remain a lot of work to do to find agreement and lay the groundwork to safeguard our planet.
Fighting climate change is a priority for the European Parliament.Together with the governments of the EU member states, the EP is co-legislator on EU climate legislation.Parliament is determined to ensure that the EU plays a leading role, not only in international negociations but also through its own practical measures against climate change.
The EU will reduce its emissions by at least 20 % below 1990 levels in 2020,whatever is decided here in Copenhagen. But EU is ready to go further, and to move to 30%,if others are also ready to step up their offers in a meaningful and comparable way.The US and China were called to contribute further to a successful outcome to the conference.
S&D MEPs together with other members of the EP delegation organise in the Bella Center a 'side event' -"A Global Carbon Market"
