A new steep in Poznan
08/12/08. The conference is considered to be the "stepping stone on the path from Bali Conference (2008) to Copenhagen (2009)" European Socialists were present at the Bali Conference in December 2008 where they helped the European Commission put pressure on other delegations to get agreement on the Bali Road Map.
The objective of this meeting is to prepare the talks in Copenhagen by exploring and possibly finding agreements on four key issues that are prioritised in the Bali Road map: sectoral agreements, CDMs and land use and forestry (LULUCF), Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (REDD), financing and development (Adaptation).
Tackling Climate change, a key issue for the PSE Group
This is why PSE MEPs have played a key role on the European Parliament's Temporary Committee on Climate Change. Guido Sacconi MEP is the Chair of the Committee, which will adopt in February 2009 its recommendations on how the European Union should tackle climate change in the future. On the four key issues that will be discussed in Poznan, Socialists have positions which have been developed in consultation with the Commission and civil society. The PSE Group adopted a discussion paper in September 2008 which sets out the rational behind our position. (See our next section “Extract of the Day”).
